USING wsOMR WITH THE TORONTO FREE-NET
-------------------------------------
by Rey Carolino (aa978@torfree.net)
Last Updated: April 12, 1996
This documentation will be updated from time to time to accomodate
any changes in the Toronto Free-Net's Menu. Please check the most
current update of this file in the TFN PUBLIC DOWNLOAD AREA (go
PDA). The filename will be: TFNWSOMR.Dxx, where "xx" refers to
the current version number of this documentation. The current
filename of this documentation is: TFNWSOMR.D00
This is not the OFFICIAL mail reader of the TFN (they don't have
one at the moment) and so the TFN Help Desk will not be in a
position to help you in installing or using this program. If you
have any problems using this mail reader in the Toronto Free-Net,
please email your problems to REY CAROLINO at this address:
AA978@TORFREE.NET

The file WSOMR110.ZIP will be downloaded in your download directory
(in this example, let's assume "c:\download").
Use PKUNZIP to uncompress the file to a temporary directory in your
hard disk or floppy diskette.
Example 1 (to uncompress the file to a floppy disk in drive A:),
type this DOS command:
pkunzip c:\download\wsomr110.zip a: <enter>
Example 2 (to uncompress the file to a temporary directory in your
hard disk called c:\temp), type this DOS command:
c: <enter>
cd\ <enter>
md TEMP <enter>
cd\temp <enter>
pkunzip c:\download\wsomr110.zip c:\temp\
INSTALLING wsOMR
================
Go to the temporary directory (or your floppy diskette) where you
uncompressed the WSOMR110.ZIP file and run the INSTALL.EXE file.
For example, if the file is in your "c:\temp" directory, follow
these instructions:
c: <enter>
cd\temp <enter>
install <enter>
Follow the instructions on your screen.
[Note: When prompted for the Download and Upload directories,
you may wish to change the default directories to the
directories specified in your Communication software to
avoid the necessity of transferring files to and from those
directories]
After the installation, you may delete the files in your
temporary directory (in this example, c:\temp).
CONFIGURING wsOMR for the Toronto Free-Net
==========================================
If you install wsOMR in a directory other than "c:\wsomr", then replace
all references to "c:\wsomr" to that directory:
Run wsOMR as follows:
c: <enter>
cd\wsomr <enter>
wsomr <enter>
Use the right arrow key to move the cursor to EDIT.
Highlight CONFIGURATION and press ENTER.
Highlight UPLOAD/DOWNLOAD and choose FILE EXTENSION FOR RFC/SOUP
Delete ALL entries in that line and leave only an asterisk (*).
Press ESCAPE when done
Screen will show:
Save the changes to C:\WSOMR\WSOMR.INI (y/n)
Press [Enter] for yes
Answer "Y" for yes or simply hit the ENTER key.
Go to the FILES menu.
Choose TYPE
Select RFC (Internet, Pine, Eudora)
Choose NEW HOST
You will be prompted to enter a new BBS ID:
Type your TFN ID Number (eg AA978) and ENTER.
You are now ready to use wsOMR with the Toronto Free-Net.
DOWNLOADING YOUR NEW MAILS
==========================
Logon to the TFN
Type "go dlpersona"
This menu will show up:
<< Download persoal files >>>
<go dlpersona>
1 Download your NEW, incoming mail
2 Prompt for download of all your mail folders
3 Download any file in your work directory
4 Prompt for download of all files in your work directory
5 Download your Lynx Bookmarks file
--------------------------------------------------------------
h=Help | x=Exit Free-Net | p=previous menu | m=main menu
Type "1" for DOWNLOAD YOUR NEW, INCOMING MAIL
Screen will show:
NOTE: In the preceeding examples, we will assume that your TFN
ID Number is AA978 :
[/usr/spool/mail/aa978]
Now downloading /usr/spool/mail/aa978.
/home/portman/bin/dlprotocol.sh: /home/portman/bin/count_event: not found
Report problems to portman@torfree.net
File Selected: /usr/spool/mail/aa978
Available protocols:
x = XModem
y = YModem
z = ZModem
t = type file using pager
c = type file for capture
q = abort file transfer
Protocol:
If your communication software, support ZMODEM, type "z". Otherwise,
choose XModem or YModem whichever protocol your software supports.
Screen will show:
Will download s AA978 (press RETURN to continue)
Note that this process will *NOT* automatically delete your emails
from your INBOX. You must still DELETE your emails manually
after you have successfully downloaded your mails. If you do not
delete them, the same emails will be included the next time you
do your download.
Your mails will be downloaded into a file that will be named AA978
(ie, your TFN ID number). If a file of the same name already exists
in your download directory, some communication software (like Telix)
will add the extension .000, .001, .002, etc. to the filename (hence,
aa978.001, aa978.002, aa978.003, etc.). Other software may prompt
you to input a new filename- in which case you must ensure that the
filename is your TFN ID number (in this example, AA978) and you can assign
any file extension that you wish (eg, AA978.MAI, AA978.1, AA978.02,
AA978.003, etc). If your software will change the filename, you
should rename the file back to AA978 by typing the following DOS
command (assume, the filename was changed to AA9780):
rename AA9780 aa978.001
This will change the name of the downloaded file to AA978.001.
[IMPORTANT: If the filename is other than your ID number, wsOMR will
not be able to find your mail packet]
To read your downloaded emails, logoff from the Free-Net. Quit
your communication software and run wsOMR with the "I" (Internet)
parameter-
c: <enter>
cd\wsomr <enter>
wsomr -i <enter>
Press ENTER on your TFN ID Host
Choose OPEN Packet
The list of your downloaded mail packets will show up.
Highlight the packet you want to read and there's all your emails.
[For more instructions in using wsOMR, refer to the file "wsomr.doc"
that is in the wsomr directory]
UPLOADING YOUR EMAILS TO TFN
============================
At the moment, the TFN does not have a menu to accomodate the uploading
of your emails done using an offline mail reader like wsOMR. This is
still a work-in-progress at the TFN and until this process is completed,
you could only do your replies/emails online in the normal manner.
Alternatively, you can TRY this work-around. It is an awkward work
around -and don't blame wsOMR for all the hassles- but if you are doing
a big email, it could be worth all the troubles since you will have the
convenience of creating your email offline without the pressure of the
one-hour time limit of TFN. You could even use your favourite DOS-based
wordprocessor (like Wordperfect) in creating your email.
Here's how:
After doing your emails via wsOMR (refer to the wsOMR documentation file-
WSOMR.DOC - for instructions in composing your emails offline), a file
called "AA978.TXT" (where "aa978" is your TFN ID number) will be created
in the Upload directory of wsOMR (which defaults to c:\wsomr\upload).
This file will contain all the emails that you have created and ready
for sending via the TFN.
There are two things you have to do to send these emails via the TFN.
First, upload the file to your work directory in the TFN. Next, use the
MR mail reader (instead of PINE) to send the email.
To UPLOAD the file to your work directory at TFN:
Logon to the TFN
Type: "go file"
This menu will show up:
<<< File Services >>>
<go file>
1 Manipulate Files in Your `work' Directory...

2 Send a file from TFN to your computer (DOWNLOAD)...
3 Send a file from your computer to TFN (UPLOAD)...

Your Choice ==>
Choose "5. Send a file from your computer to TFN (UPLOAD)"
[If this doesn't work, try item "3" instead]
Your screen will show:
Report problems to portman@torfree.net
Are you sending a text file? [y/n]
Choice?
Answer "Y" for YES
Screen will show:
Available protocols:
x = XModem
y = YModem (currently offline)
z = ZModem
Protocol:
If your communication software supports ZMODEM, type "z".
Otherwise, type the protocol supported by your communication software.
When your screen shows:
Protocol: z
Uploading using ZMODEM .. Start your transfer now.
Srz waiting to receive.**B000000027fed4
You should initiate the UPLOAD process from your communication software.
If you are using TELIX for DOS, you will press "ALT-S" at this point
to start the UPLOAD. If you are using a Windows-based communication
software, point to your icon that says UPLOAD. Make sure that your
communication software is set to the same file transfer protocol
(in this example, ZMODEM) that you have chosen earlier. When prompted
for the file to be uploaded, type (or browse for it): "aa978.txt"
(replace "aa978" with your ID number). This file is in your download
directory of wsOMR (the default is: c:\wsomr\upload).
After uploading the file "aa978.txt" to your work directory at TFN,
you are now ready to send the email. If your mail reader is configured
for PINE (the TFN default), you must temporarily change your reader to
MR in order to accomodate this process (I told you this is not a pretty
work-around!).
Type: "go config"
This menu will appear:
<<< Configure Your Account >>>
<go config>
1 Set Your Environment Parameters... <go env>
Mail Preferences
2 Change your mail reader to PINE (recommended)
3 Change your mail reader to MR (not recommended)
4 Edit your signature file
5 Forward your Mail... <go forward>

6 Change your news reader to TIN (recommended)
7 Change your news reader to MGNR (not recommended)
8 Fix news posting problem
--------------------------------------------------------------
h=Help | x=Exit Free-Net | p=previous menu | m=main menu
Choose item "3" Change your mail reader to MR
This screen will show:
Type 'save' at the "Your Choice ==>" prompt to save this change.
Press RETURN to Continue:
If you prefer PINE as your mail reader, DO NOT type 'save'. This
will ensure that the next time you logon to the Free-Net, your
mail reader will reset back to PINE.
After changing to MR, type: "mail"
A screen similar to this will show up:
Current message is #1 (1 is last)

n = Read next unread message
d = Delete this message
p = Back to previous screen
h = Help, list of additional commands
Now, type "S" to send your email. (You will probably wonder why that
choice is not included in the list of choices- I don't know)
The screen will show:

Electronic Mail (y/n) ==>
Type "y" for yes.
Screen will show:

To:
The TO: field is not important since you have already defined your
recepients in wsOMR. But you have to type in something in that
field, so simply type any characters and hit ENTER.
Screen will show:

ASDFAF - Can't verify user, might be incorrect
Is this correct? (y/n)
Of course it is incorrect, but you don't care. wsOMR will take
care of this for you. Type: "Y" for YES.
Screen will show:

Again, wsOMR will take care of the SUBJECT field, so simply type
anything on this field and hit ENTER
This screen will show:

Dear Frank,
Your wsOMR mail reader is great..
Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Rey
If you are only sending one email, you will now press
CTRL-X (Exit).
==============================
CAUTION! WARNING! IMPORTANT!
==============================
If you are sending more than one email, you will have to
send them one at a time- which means that you must delete
the rest of the other emails (using CTRL-K) and repeat
this exercise for each of those other emails. If you do
not delete the rest of your emails, *ALL* your emails will
be sent to the first email recepient *ONLY*. (Now, don't
curse wsOMR for this. Remember, we are just doing a
work-around. Once the TFN has decided to put up a menu
to allow for email uploading, this process will be very
very simple and straightforward).
Press CTRL-X (exit)
Screen will show:

There is one final thing that you MUST do to end this exercise:
Delete the reply file "aa978.txt" otherwise the same messages
will be sent the next time you send your emails. To do this:
type "go file". Choose "Manipulate Files in your work directory".
Choose "Delete a file". Type "aa978.txt" (replace "aa978" with
